When considering a rug for your dining room there are a couple of things you should do. You must measure the width and the length of your dining set with all the chairs pulled out. If your table has an extension that you will be using often, it’s a good idea to measure the table at full extension.
When measuring, keep in mind all dining room chairs should be fully on the rug. Ideally, your dining room rug should extend approximately 24-36 inches on each side from the edge of your dining table so you and your guests can slide the chairs in and out without falling off the edge of the rug.
If your rug is too small, chairs can dangle over the edge of the rug ultimately causing buckling, slippage, and frustration when trying to slide the chair back in place. Don’t forget to take into account any sideboards or china cabinets in the room. Your new rug should not extend beneath those dining room piece
Make sure you use a quality rug pad to prevent premature wear, indentation from furniture and rug matting.
